A fascination with the glamour of the past—the stars of the silver screen circa 1940 — and the present — the bedazzling Lady Gaga — led celebrity makeup artist Sharon Gault of Opus Beauty to envision vintage-inspired makeup looks for designer Kelly Nishimoto’s Winter 2010 fashion show in L.A.

“Inspiration comes from important moments in fashion too,” says Gault. “In the 80s, Thierry Mugler’s exaggerated shoulder pads and nipped-in waists called for a bold approach to makeup. The challenge for my team was to take retro glamour and push it into the future — what I call the Futuristic Forties.”

Key to this all-out allure: berry-red lips, a strong brow, precision black eyeliner and luxurious, frankly fake lashes. Here’s how celebrity makeup artist Priscilla Rangel teamed up with Gault to create the look:

▪ First, I applied Avène Rétrinal+ 0.1 Cream ($66) to prep the skin and give it a fresh, moist finish. To help the skin stay dewy throughout the show, I followed with a spritz of Avène Thermal Spring Water.

▪ Next, I smoothed on a moisturizing cream foundation. To sculpt cheekbones, instead of blusher, I brushed on a loose powder two to four shades darker than the model’s skin tone, sweeping the brush along the hollows of the cheeks.

▪ For dramatic eyes, I blended OCC Cosmetics Loose Colour Concentrates — a shimmering micronized color pigment—in Golden Beige and Hazel Brown Shimmer in the crease of the lids.

▪ Kelly wanted a smoky, sexy eye, so I lined lids with M.A.C. Fluidline in Blacktrack, a gel liner that delivers the precision of a liquid with a silken finish. Next, I applied lush fake lashes from Ardelle with Duo Lash Glue. With a few strokes of M.A.C. Eyebrows in Spiked, a pen-like brow definer, I created a bold brow.

▪ For a strong, edgy take on the classic red lip, I blended OCC Cosmetics Lip Tar in Stalker, an intense blue-red, with Katricia, a muted violet. The result: a rich, luscious berry shade.

▪ I finished with one last misting of Avène Thermal Spring Water all over the face for a fresh, dewy look, and to give makeup more staying power.
