Born Thandiwe Ajdewa Newton, Thandie (pronounced Tan-dee) is the daughter of a Zimbabwean mother and a British father. She lived in Zambia until political unrest caused her family to move back to the United Kingdom, where she eventually enrolled in London’s Art Education School and studied modern dance. Later, a back injury forced her to give up dancing and led to her auditioning for films. She moved to Los Angeles to pursue her acting career, but her British accent limited the number of roles she was offered. She then decided to return to Britain where she went to Cambridge University and earned a degree in anthropology. While in school, she still continued her acting and was cast as one of the lead roles in Mission: Impossible 2 with Tom Cruise. Due to a delay in shooting for this movie, Thandie was forced to turn down a role in Charlie’s Angels, which was later given to Lucy Liu. Thandie has had supporting roles in movies such as The Pursuit of Happyness with box-office draw Will Smith, and Norbit. Her biggest role to date was in 2004’s Crash, which won an Oscar for Best Picture. She is currently filming Oliver Stone’s W. (a chronicle of George W. Bush’s life and presidency), in which she stars as Condoleezza Rice. Newton married English writer/director/producer Ol Parker in 1998. The couple have two daughters: Ripley, born in 2000, and Nico, born in 2004. Thandie’s smooth skin and perfect complexion help give her a look that’s nearly impossible to duplicate.
