What we are

At Burt’s Bees, we scour the good earth to find the most natural, effective ingredients to put in our products. To us, the word “natural” means only one thing. It means, “harvested from nature.” And we adhere to that definition like the strictest of school teachers.

What we're not

There are ingredients that you will never find in any Burt’s Bees product. Things like petroleum which can be toxic. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, which is a harsh, aggressive ingredient used in certain beauty products. And when was the last time you saw a farmer growing Propylene Glycol? Rather than loading our products up with harsh chemicals or unnecessary fillers, we offer you only the good stuff.

Full disclosure, naturally

We label every product we make with what we call a “natural bar.” This bar discloses exactly how natural that specific product is. Many of the things we make are 100% natural, but sometimes they can’t be. Once in awhile, we have to create something in our “kitchen” in order to offer you the best products possible. For example, Vitamin E is an essential part of any skin care regimen, but it does not remain stable in its natural state. So when you see the words Tocopheryl Acetate on one of our labels, it’s just our fancy word for Vitamin E.

Colors found in nature, not created in labs

We use only natural colors in our people-care products. Some of these include Beta-Carotene, Chlorophyll, Titanium Dioxide and Mica. These natural colors have been proven safe unlike many artificial colors that have been banned by the FDA over the years. As far as fragrance goes, we use it only when necessary, and it’s always Phthalate-free.

Good things really do come in small packages

Since our products are made from as many natural ingredients as possible, we intentionally design our packaging so that you‘ll use them up before they expire. Most of our products and packaging are created in part from recycled materials, or have been developed with re-use in mind, like our easy-to-recycle aluminum containers. We do not use nasty artificial preservatives like Methyl Paraben or Diazolidinyl Urea. Our products contain only gentle, natural preservatives that both inhibit the growth of microorganisms and enhance product stability. We are proud to have developed a natural preservative for some of our water-based products (such as lotion) that mimics the defense systems found in the human body. What could be more natural than that?

What does Hypoallergenic really mean?

There is no defined methodology to test for allergic reactions in beauty products, nor does the FDA regulate the use of the term “hypoallergenic.” Consequently, we do not position our products as hypoallergenic. Our products contain safe and effective ingredients that have withstood the test of time including beeswax, botanicals and essential oils. Our products do not contain petroleum-synthesized fillers that may irritate the skin. A list of ingredients can be found on every product page. Just look for the “List of Ingredients” link.

And what's Non-comedogenic? Is this an SAT test?

"Comedogenic" refers to ingredients in beauty products that clog pores and can lead to blackheads, pimples or cosmetic-related acne. We use things like beeswax and plant oils instead of potentially comedogenic ingredients like mineral oil, petrolatum, paraffin and red dyes that are commonly found in personal care products.

We're not just nature lovers, we're animal lovers too

Burt’s Bees would never conduct product or ingredient tests of any kind on animals. A few of our products contain ingredients derived from animals such as beeswax, royal jelly and milk. And for that, we thank them.
